Leave from studies

Leave from studies means taking time out from your programme or course with the intention of returning at a later date. If there are special reasons, you may be granted an approved leave with a guaranteed place to return to at later, specified date. Your reasons must be supported by formal documentation please see Required documentation below.

If your reasons do not qualify as special reasons, or if you haven't provided the necessary documentation to support your reasons, you will not be guaranteed a place. In this case, you will only be able to return if there are places available on the programme or course. If you have any questions, contact your faculty's Student Administration Office.

Please note: If you need a residence permit to study in Sweden and apply for leave from studies, you are responsible for ensuring that your study progress meets the the Swedish Migration Agency's requirements for an extension of your residence permit. If you have any questions about the requirements, please contact the Swedish Migration Agency.

You must log in to apply for leave from studies. When you log in, the first thing you need to do is enter your computer ID followed by @mau.se. Then use your computer ID and password to log in as usual.
Required documentation

Documents should be uploaded as files (scanned or photographed) with your application.

Permitted file types are pdf, jpg, jpeg, png, gif, doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx, odt, txt, rtf. Please do not remove or change the file extension. File size cannot exceed 20MB.

  • Medical reasons: Doctor’s certificate or equivalent.
  • Social reasons: Personal letter and certificate that verifies the cited reason.
  • Care of a child in accordance with section 1 of the Parental Leave Act: Personal account and population registration certificates for the applicant and child.
  • Deferred leave in accordance with the Act on employees' right to leave of absence for educational purposes (SFS 1974:981): Employer's decision not to grant the employee's request for leave of absence.
  • Duties as a student union representative: Document provided by the student union showing the duties and their scope.
  • Military service and civil service duties and comparable duties of an obligatory nature: covers both basic and refresher training: A copy on the "Decision on enlistment" or similar document in which the call-up date is stated.
